First things to know about Osgood-Schlatter Disease
Osgood-Schlatter Disease refers to the painful inflammation of the patellar tendon, just below the patella (kneecap), at the attachment to the tibial tuberosity.
Presentation
Pain, tenderness, and swelling in the front portion of the knee just below the patella (kneecap) which may also present as a lump. Found in adolescents, especially those participating in activities which involve repetitive running and jumping. Osgood-Schlatter Disease may occur in both knees.
Cause
Repetitive running and jumping places high demands on the tibial protuberance, along the shin bone, just below the kneecap. These high demands and stressors then cause an inflammatory reaction of the tendon which attaches at this site.
How We Can Help
If you are unsure if you are dealing with Osgood-Schlatter Disease or not it is a good idea to consult with a musculoskeletal specialist who can properly diagnose and treat this condition. Rest and decreasing the activity which aggravates the complaint for a period of time are crucial steps in recovering. Treatment for this condition also involves stretches, taping and/or potentially bracing, strengthening exercises.
